KUPLA Tutor training

The KUPLA tutor training includes six parts and is intended for training higher education student tutors. The training courses consist of PowerPoint slides with notes that include instructions for the person conducting the training. The tutor training and materials are intended as support for student tutors and the parties that train them.

The training is designed to start with part 1. “The role of a tutor” and end with part 6. “The role of substances in student communities”. The six parts of the training can also be taught as standalone courses. The materials may also be combined and modified as you please. Read more below!

Description

The KUPLA tutor training includes six parts and is intended for training higher education student tutors. The training is designed to start with part 1. “The role of a tutor” and end with part 6. “The role of substances in student communities”. The six parts of the training can also be taught as standalone courses. The materials may also be combined and modified as you please.

In addition to the training, you can also use the Skillful Tutor exercise book as an aid in planning, implementing and reporting on tutoring.

1. The tutor’s role

This training explores the tutor’s personal motives and their goals in tutoring. After this training, the tutor understands their own role and duties in relation to the new students. The tutor learns to see their own role and duties in relation to the various expectations aimed at tutoring.
Duration: approx. 60 min.

2. Planning tutoring activities

In this training, the tutor learns to better understand the goals of tutoring. The tutor is given tools for planning goal-oriented tutoring. The participants learn the importance of agreeing on common rules. The tutor becomes familiar with the nature of reporting and what it means to them and to others.

3. The tutor’s group leadership skills and safe atmosphere

This training goes over the different phases of the group process and how to take them into consideration in tutoring. The participant learns the meaning of a safe group and is taught ways to create a safe atmosphere in a group. The tutor learns that guiding a group is a skill that can be practised. In this training, the tutor is provided with ways to plan ice breaking and team bonding exercises that suit all new students.

4. Acknowledging diversity and inclusiveness in tutoring

In this training, the tutors explore stereotypes and their own prejudices. The tutor learns how to plan inclusive activities and exercises that suit all freshers.

5. Study ability and mental well-being

This training discusses study ability and the elements that comprise study ability. The tutor learns to understand why talking about mental well-being and the ability to learn is essential in tutoring. After the training, the tutor knows how to take mental well-being issues into consideration in tutor activities. The tutor learns how to support their own coping ability and knows how to raise their concerns with a new student. The tutor is instructed on how to guide a new student find help if they need it.

6. The role of substances in student communities

In this training, the tutor reflects on the role substances play in their own study community and learns to understand why it is important to discuss substances as part of tutoring. The tutor learns how to take substance-related issues into consideration in their activities. After this training, the tutor will know how to address worries related to substance abuse and refer a new student to find help.
